There will probably be no new posts until Tuesday, since we’re off to Masai Mara for a 2-day safari. Also, please pray for me (Joel) as I’m trying hard to fight through some hard traveler’s sickness today and I’m a little worried about traveling so much right now.

Dear Miss Danise
Posted in Uncategorized on June 27, 2009 | 4 Comments »
Dear Miss Danise, In the city of Nairobi I saw some poverty I didn’t like. I was hoping that I could collect money and send it to my good friends Charles, and Darlene so they could exchange the money and give it to people who need it. I was also hoping that they would help [...]
Lots of houses and bank accounts

Charles Coulston has been thinking the last couple of days about the fact that the President of Gabon has just died. I believe he was about 92. (It’s hard to fact-check right now, but I think my numbers are close.) I believe he was the longest-serving president of any African nation, and he was extremely [...]
Roasted marshmallows, Kenya style

One of the things we brought in our many bags was a set of packages of marshmallows from the US. (We learned after we got here that they have recently begun selling marshmallows in Kenya — but they are kind of different, because they are pink and have a slightly different flavor (like cotton candy), [...]

At chapel this morning we talked about Psalm 113, which is really something to hold on to for former street children. The Lord is higher than all nations. His glory rises to the skies. No person is like the Lord our God. God sits high in heaven. God is so high above is that he [...]

I’m so used to fast computer and internet speed that it becomes frustrating for me to not be able to do what I’m used to. But I’m working on being more flexible on time at the moment, so I’ll be content to post only a little now and spread out some more postings for later [...]
Presentations, Problems, and Candy

Tuesday was filled with a lot of teaching. In the morning, we worked – including my children! – on teaching the MITS kids how to make presentations. They have a “virtual library” (basically a computer lab of donated laptops) and a few students that are past basic literacy spend 4 hours each day learning computer [...]
Chameleons

The Coulstons have a new house on the MITS property. It’s the first time in their many years in Kenya that they have lived in a house of their own here. We’re really fortunate and happy to be staying with them – because we get to spend time with our dear friends, because there are [...]
Visiting Kibera slum: wow
Posted in Uncategorized on June 23, 2009 | 8 Comments »
Monday was an incredibly full day. In addition to experiencing and learning more about the Kenyan legal system (more in a post to follow soon), I visited projects in the Kibera slum. I didn’t write yesterday because of time and limited internet connectivity, but also because I needed to decompress and process. Put it this [...]
Football and friends

I had often heard stories of people around the world playing football (we call it soccer) in bare feet on local fields (often rocky and dusty, and not much of a “field”). It’s almost the equivalent of sandlot baseball or street basketball – but it’s still pretty different and, dare I say, more primitive than [...]
